Dedicated scrapbookers, cut, pasted and designed projects Friday as part of A Taste of Scrapbooking Crop Weekend hosted by Memory Bound Scrapbook Store in Ankeny.
The event was held at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church in Ankeny. Participants saw demonstrations, created make-and-take projects, received door prizes, held a recipe swap and competed in scrapbook page competitions.
“It’s like a quilting bee of the past,” said Kellie Gould of Ankeny, co-owner of Memory Bound. “Everyone brings their own materials and projects to work on.”
Amy Passick of Ankeny said she has noticed a change in scrapbooking since she began the craft.
“It’s changed a lot,” she said. “When I started about three years ago, you had to make your own embellishments. Now most of them come pre-made. It’s gotten a lot more expensive.”
Kim Carpenter of Clive has been scrapbooking for 10 years and enjoys sharing her love of the hobby.
“I came so I could meet new people and share my passion for scrapbooking,” she said.
Carpenter said she works on scrapbooks because it’s important to “get down all of your memories so you can share them with people.”
Karen Thimmesch of Ankeny said the hobby gives her an opportunity to spend time with her daughter.
“It’s something that we can do together,” she said. “Otherwise, we don’t get a lot of time to spend together.”
